The biggest city in the world is even bigger than you might imagine! I will go on record to state that around nearly every corner in Tokyo awaits a photo-worthy spot! The city attracts so many tourists from all over the world. It is very rich in history, unique cuisine, and, of course, countless significant cultural assets that can be found dotted around this vast metropolis. So often, visitors research the best places to visit before they arrive but are often left wondering - what about when it comes to photography? So, let’s dive into the top spots in Tokyo, and I will give you my opinion. After so many years of experience all over Japan, photographing many visitors and residents, I will review the top places now with the following ranking system….
Ranking Key:
A +/- Highly recommended / Must Visit
B +/- Recommended / Visit if time permits
C +/- Average recommendation / Visit if nearby and time permits
LOCATION 1 - HAMARIKYU GARDENS
For sure, this beautiful 62-acre garden is a must-see! Having roots dating back to the 17th century, this impeccably maintained garden has a lot to offer! Visitors will be delighted with gorgeous cherry blossom trees in March and April, large flower beds in the spring, lush greenery in the summer, and beautiful Japanese maple trees showing off their world-famous colors in the fall. There is a reason this location is popular amongst newlywed Japanese couples for their photo sessions. The garden is conveniently positioned near central Tokyo.

LOCATION 2 - SHIBUYA CROSSING
No Tokyo photography list would be complete without Shibuya Crossing being included! This location arguably is the image that most people conjure up when thinking about Japan. Shibuya Crossing is the most epic spot that represents modern Tokyo! It is common to see thousands of people often cross this intersection at once. Multiple sources have confirmed it as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. A photo session here can yield some spectacular shots, whether day or night!

LOCATION 3 - MEIJI JINGU
When people ask me what my favorite location is in Tokyo, I never hesitate to state that Meiji Jingu is one of my favorites. It just doesn't get better than this gorgeous Shinto Shrine nestled right in the city amidst the hustle and bustle of nearby Shibuya and steps away from famous Yoyogi Park. Tranquility is the perfect word to describe Meiji Jingu. Surrounded by nature and the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, it provides an ideal backdrop for some stunning photography. The essence of Japan can be perfectly captured here, all while being steps away from the big city.

LOCATION 4 - TOKYO IMPERIAL PALACE
I've never met anyone who visited Tokyo and did not visit the Tokyo Imperial Palace grounds. Volumes can be written about this Palace; its history and significance in Japanese culture are undisputed. Countless Japanese cypress trees line the grounds and are spectacularly beautiful in any season. The portraiture here is remarkable; my clients who choose this location are always so happy they did. When in doubt, this location should be your go-to selection. The only downside is that the hours are not necessarily observed, and frequent closures do take place without notice for official Imperial events. So a backup location should always be on your mind when selecting this location.

LOCATION 5 - TOKYO TOWER AREA
This location is tricky but can be rewarding with the right amount of patience and knowledge of the general area. I enjoy photo sessions featuring the Tokyo Tower because I can get a beautiful mix of street shots with the Tower in the distant background that looks great! I highly recommend visiting Shiba Park, which is steps away from the Tower. The beautiful green space provides a perfect foreground for getting shots of the Tower. One suggestion would be to arrange a picnic with well-appointed props that can turn your photo session into a well-polished setup! So many options available to incorporate the Tower; contact me for more ideas if you decide on this location.

LOCATION 6 - HIE SHRINE
The contrast between traditional and modern Japan is so apparent at Hie Shrine! This is a photographer's and artist's dream location. The sharp lines of modern minimalistic Japan beautifully come together here at this famous Shinto Shrine. From the concrete Tori gates that welcome into the Shrine's complex to the steep step of the stairs, the contrast between old and new is everywhere. Some describe this Shrine as a masterpiece of architectural ingenuity, and I agree! It is tiny, though, and the Mini-Package I offer would be perfect here!

LOCATION 7 - SHINJUKU GYOEN NATIONAL GARDEN
If pressured into choosing just one place in all of Tokyo to select as my favorite location for photography, this location would be it! That is a huge statement for obvious reasons. However, I cannot escape the fact that this location has no negative aspects that I can think of. It is not only a photographer's dream but a true masterpiece in original Japanese form. I can unequivocally proclaim that there is everything here that one would want in a highly acclaimed garden. It sets a standard, not only in Japan but globally. Choose this location on your next photo session to find out why, and be prepared to be impressed.

LOCATION 8 - UENO PARK
This location is the go-to choice of locals when cherry blossom season arrives each year, and who would blame them? The magnificently tree-lined areas of the park are a sight to be seen! But it is not just in the spring; some say the fall season is even more beautiful. It offers an impressive array of colors from several species of trees that will turn your photo session into an unforgettable experience. You will cherish your photos if you decide on Ueno Park as the location of your next photo session with me.

LOCATION 9 - GINZA
This upscale shopping and entertainment district has so much to offer clients looking for a "me in the city" type of feeling for their set of photos. I highly recommend this area for modeling sessions or individual portraiture, as the shots always turn out great. I recommend starting shooting before sunset and ending just after sunset, providing an excellent backdrop of impressive glitzy lights. This district has buildings designed in a Japanese modern esthetic that never disappoints.

LOCATION 10 - AKIHABARA
Otherwise known as the "neon jungle," this district is a sight to see! If you decide on this location, you should begin your photo session with me just before sunset and arrange most of the shooting time to go into the darker parts of the evening. There is enough lighting to get some magnificent night portraits that will not have much noise (photography term for distortion that appears in low lighting). Even with some noise in the photos, they can be beautifully edited to give them a vintage look in a modern neon setting.
